Florida Trail Map

The 1,400 miles of the Florida Trail has a considerable amount of swampy areas and wetlands. Naturally those who venture out often have the thought of what can possibly live here. I personally rarely see snakes while out hiking, but given enough time and we all have our stories. From a far I think they’re beautiful. I give them wide birth, maybe snap a photo, and move on with the joy of having…

Florida Trail Map

An iconic flower to the 1,400 mile Florida Trail, a Pine Lily can only be found on undisturbed land. So you will never see one in the city, or even rural areas. Only if you venture out into the wilderness can you find them. They pop and explode with color along side the trail and are by far my favorite flower. Something I look for and forward to whenever I take a walk.

Florida Trail - Orange Blaze

These colorful orange blazes hand painted on the bark of a tree mark the way roughly 1,400 miles of trail across Florida. Each and every one unique, there must be tens of thousands up and down the state. I always enjoyed taking a closer look, and of all this was one of my favorites. Some have long streaky drips of paint, and others are perfectly rectangular, but this one painted on a gnarly…

Sierra Triptych

Forester Pass in the Sierra Nevada, a very well known location on the Pacific Crest Trail. Known to either make or break a hike, as too much snow can be dangerous, and gaining passage can mean it’s relatively all down hill from there to Canada. Relatively in more ways than one as this is also the highest point on the PCT at 13,153 feet. These mountains depicted in the painting are the peaks you…

The Next Chapter

I’m off trail. I broke my foot in two places around mile 200, and proceeded to walk on that broken foot for roughly another 800 miles. Very much so determined to achieve my goal, mentally 100% in it, but not knowing why my foot was in so much pain for an entire month.

You can watch the whole story unfold through this video: https://youtu.be/WdVskPFiLJU

Walking on a broken foot is rough. Some…

Lake of the Clouds

Documenting places I’ve traveled hiking through art

The Lake of the Clouds Hut just south of Mt Washington on the Appalachian Trail. Hiking through this area on my 4,800 mile Eastern Continental Trail thru hike I was amazed at these small Appalachian Mountain Club huts being in such high places. Requiring all supplies and food to be either packed up to them by hand, or helicoptered in. This one…

The Desert
image

The desert? Sort of. The upper end of a thousand miles through arid dry country with little reprieve from the sun, and even less natural water.

I started my hike up the West Coast on May 10th. Heaps, John, and I slept under a bridge the night before near the terminus, near the Mexican border. We knew it was going to be extremely hot the next day so the goal was an early morning start.…

Pacific Crest Trail Yoyo 2018 - Introduction

Pacific Crest Trail Yoyo 2018 – Introduction

image

I want to do something big. So I guess I will.

Welcome to the Pacific Crest Trail, in itself shorter than my 2016 Eastern Continental Trail hike, but if you do it twice! It’s quite long then, huh?

So I guess I will.

In reality, welcome to my 2018 Pacific Crest Trail Yoyo. Named such because the motion of the hike mimics the toy. First up, then back down again, or two continuous thru hikes of the…
